Government Issued Vital Certificates

A Nunavut Birth Certificate is your foundation identity document and is used for obtaining a passport, driver’s licence, social insurance number and other legal documents and purposes.


Fees & Processing Times

If you are applying for a Nunavut Birth Certificate to support a separate application such as for a Passport, Driver's Licence, Immigration, or Native Status, it is important to check with the organization requesting the document to ensure you obtain the correct vital record. Changes cannot be made once an order has been placed.

Payment can be made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cheque or money order – Please make the cheque or money order payable to ‘Vital Certificate Processing Services’.

Certificates ordered with regular service average 3 to 4 weeks to be processed and delivered.

Certificates ordered with rush service average 10 to 15 business days to be processed and delivered. Requests for rush service will be processed within 2 business days and will be couriered to you.

If no record of the birth is found by the Nunavut Vital Statistics Agency, fees will be applied to the search cost and will not be refunded by the Agency.

All birth certificates in Nunavut are mailed or couriered directly from the Nunavut Vital Statistics Agency.


Who Can Apply for a Birth Certificate?

  • The person who is the subject of the certificate; or
  • The parent of the person who is subject to the certificate;
  • The spouse of the person who is the subject.

Nunavut Birth Certificate

The Birth Certificate includes the individual's full name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, registration number and registration date, PLUS the parents' names.

Photocopy of Nunavut Birth Registration

This a photocopy of the actual birth registration filled out at the time of birth. The photocopy is certified as a true copy of the original.

NOTE: Certified copies are rarely needed by citizens and are, by law, for restricted use only. They are generally only required for court or consulate purposes. They are not recommended for use as identification.
