Birth certificates are only available from the Nunavut Department of Health and Social Services if the birth occurred in Nunavut on or after April 1, 1999. Please visit the Northwest Territories birth certificate page to obtain a birth certificate for births that occurred prior to April 1, 1999.

Who Can Apply for a Nunavut Birth Certificate With This Application?

This site is available for use by the public and legal profession to obtain Nunavut Government approved and official certificates of birth issued by Nunavut Vital Statistics as an independent authorized agent.

Original or replacement birth certificates may be ordered with this application by:

  • The person named on the birth registration; or
  • A person named as a parent on the live birth registration; or
  • The spouse of the person whose name is on the birth registration

Fees & Processing Times

Payment can be made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cheque or money order – Please make cheque or money order payable to “ExpressLegal”.

All Nunavut vital certificates are $60.00 each and include all taxes, search, shipping and processing charges. Average delivery time for regular service is 3 to 4 weeks.

If no record of the birth is found by Nunavut Vital Statistics, fees will be applied to the search cost and will not be refunded.

Nunavut Certificates of Birth

If you are applying for a Nunavut birth certificate to support an application for other identification such as a Passport, Driver’s License etc., please check with the issuing agency to ensure you obtain the correct certificate. Changes cannot be made once an order has been placed.

Nunavut Paper Size Birth Certificate (8.5” x 7”): Contains Full Name of Person, Date and Place of Birth, Sex, Registration Number, Registration Date, Parents names and places of birth. Note: A certificate is always issued in the maiden surname of mother.

Nunavut Restricted Photocopy of Birth Registration: Contains all the information that appears on the original registration. A restricted photocopy is a copy of the original registration and is usually required for legal purposes. They are, by law, for restricted use only. A restricted photocopy can only be issued if authorized by the Registrar General of Vital Statistics or on the order of a court.
