If you have already completed a legal name change, a British Columbia Change of Name Certificate may be required to change your name on your driver’s licence, other forms of identification, and other legal documents.

Fees & Processing Times

If you are applying for a British Columbia Change of Name Certificate to support a separate application such as for a Passport, Driver's Licence, Immigration, or Native Status, it is important to check with the organization requesting the document to ensure you obtain the correct vital record. Changes cannot be made once an order has been placed.

Certificates ordered with regular service average 15 business days to be processed and delivered.

Certificates ordered with rush service average 5 to 8 business days to be processed and delivered. Requests for rush service will be processed within 2 business days and will be couriered to you.

If no record of the Change of Name is found by the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency, fees will be applied to the search cost and will not be refunded by the Agency.

All Change of Name certificates in British Columbia are mailed or couriered directly from the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency.

Who Can Apply for a Change of Name Certificate?

  • The person who is the subject of the certificate; or
  • A parent of the person who is subject to the certificate, if that person is less than 19 years of age.

British Columbia Change of Name Certificate

A British Columbia Change of Name Certificate lists the old and new names of all persons involved in the legal change of name, the city of residence at the time of the change of name, registration number, and date of registration.

IMPORTANT: A Change of Name Certificate is a government issued certificate that is proof there has already been a legal name change.
